Examples of Sociocratic Organizations

The most frequent request we receive is for examples. Give me an example. Who is using sociocracy? It is also the most difficult question to answer.

Many organizations—businesses, corporations, schools, condominiums, cohousing communities, etc.—use sociocracy or parts of it to organize themselves. Most, however, want to be known for what they do, not as a sociocratic organization. For exmaple, most corporations use the methods developed under Total Quality Management, but don’t want to be known as “TQM companies.” Labeling of this kind distracts from their mission and defines them in reference to another organization, not themselves.

It is also problematic to label an organization “sociocratic” when they may be using one or two of the methods, or are using all the methods and perfectly sociocratic but have developed their system without contact with the Sociocratic Centrum. The Centrum formally certifies both consultants and organizations, and defines the requirements of the Sociocratic Circle-Organization Method. Is a company not sociocratic if it isn’t formally certified?

The need remains for examples, however. Here we have collected stories, some entirely fictional and some laundered from actual organizations that we think will be helpful in understanding how sociocracy works.

Green Amigos: How the Circle-archy Works, or Having Fun in Business Again

Examples & Stories

Where do you start? “Green Amigos” is a story about a small landscaping company in which success brings three friends and a shovel to heartbreak and near bankruptcy. But just in time, a bartender tells them about a mysterious woman in a suit who saves their
